Help Me Pick A URL
I’m in the process of rapidly getting website and other info rolling for the new church.
Our name at this point, which will most likely stick, is Missio Dei Community.
Why? Well, that’s another post that I’ll share soon.
The quick and easy info…it’s latin and means “mission of God.”
SO – I thought you could help me to pick the best URL for the website.
Poll should be embedded below.
And please feel free to leave any comments here as well.
Thanks for helping!

Praying for you bro… This is exciting.
Personally, I like a straight forward name like “God’s Mission Church”. But then again, I don’t have to live with it, you do!
I voted for missionsantacruz.org, but if you can get .com I would definitely do that too.
It would seem that the words “mission” and “Santa Cruz” would contain more search terms that would be used. I also agree with Randy in staying away from Flash and other things that would hinder your indexing.
Are you able to get missiodei.org or .com?
Liana – .be is actually a country code domain for Belgium. I just thought there was something cool about the concept of being, but figured it wouldn’t exactly help much with remembering the domain. Of course, lifechurch.tv did pretty well with a domain that is actually the country code domain for Tuvalu (wherever the heck that is).
Richie – Yeah, I had that thought when I posted this. So bad news? That’s great news! They could have been bought by someone trying to rip me off, but since I know you are such a Godly man with a heart for church planting, it’s so nice that you are going to give me a discount on the urls!!
To be honest & considering they are only $10 a piece, I would buy these of three (missiodeisantacruz.com, missiodeisc.co, mdsantacruz.com) so you have all of them and for SEO (Search Engine Optimization) purposes. But if I had to pick one that would be the main it would be missiodeisantacruz…….easiest to communicate in dialogue.
Much Love Brutha…..workin on the logo as we speak.
my .02 (may be worth less… lol)
i think that http://www.missionsantacruz.org would be the easier one to communicate to people and may be the easier one to remember.
the bad news is that i just bought all of those domains and i now have them for sale! LOL
I like the first one, the longer one. I don’t really have a good reason, I just like it better.
I voted for missiodeisc, but missiodeisantacruz would be second choice (though long to type). There is a missiodeisj (in San Jose) and on google there are a number of missiodei____.com/.org/.net websites with various town names, whole or abbreviated, following the name. Not sure if that’s a plus or a minus. Could make them appear to be affiliated. Missionsantacruz could be confused with the historical Santa Cruz Mission. What is .be?
wow – this is difficult because none of them really jump out at me and I’ve just spent 15 minutes reworking the words and checking go daddy. I would definitely use .org but buy and re-direct the .com. Personally, I had to change my business name because the domain name wasn’t working, not saying you are in that position but something to consider. Sorry I couldn’t be more help.
Yeah, what Frank & Randy said makes sense. If search engine is scanning the page for type just having santa cruz on it will help in searches. So I still go with #1 or #2, #2 being easier to type out. And go figure, the one that spent the majority of 2009 dealing with medical stuff thinks of a medical website
As do I Randy, as do I.
Hopefully New Castle and Guiness.
Thanks for your thoughts Frank and Randy.
I voted for missiodeisc.com but also like the first one. My opinion is that definitely have the site be a .org but buy the .com if available and have it forward. It is an extremely long domain name if you add the santa cruz to domain, and not sure if really needed. Abbreviations will work, submitting your site to google and a couple of other places, as well as having many pages with seo will get you listed on the top page.
When you do get to site design stay away from flash and images for the body, makes it hard to get indexed. Looking forward to seeing what is on tap for this new church.
Including “santacruz” in the url will help with SEO, although it’s not the most important thing (I’d say page titles, use of keywords in large volumes of text, and site structure are probably more important).
Frank
Good question Chris. Not sure. I know you can pay to have ads on the side with certain search terms, but I’m not sure how SEO works in terms of url. Any SEO wizards?
Oh and I added one more on there for those who looked early. Probably a long shot, but thought I’d add it, just for fun.
I’m not SEO expert – does the URL have any impact if someone is searching google for church santa cruz? If Santa Cruz is in the URL does it move it higher in google results?
Good question. Part of the reason I put the other in there or asked for comments here. Seems like people naturally go to .com first, but I’d be interested to know if you guys think .org would be better. Either way, there’s a good chance I’d buy both to point the people who put the wrong one in the right direction.
And yeah, mdsantacruz was my least favorite, but I never thought of the medical thing. Ha! That’s funny!
So others… .com or .org?
Although long to type, go for the full on name. 2nd choice would be missiodeisc.com
MDSantaCruz seems like a santa cruz medical website. You don’t get to use .org for nonprofit?
