That's well said!
I don't think it's wrong to be affected by style or genre of songs, per se. I also think that I see you have your head wrapped around worship in such a way that the phrases you used make much more sense now. (That sentence doesn't).
There is danger in using emotion and atmosphere to evoke "worship". Even Britney Spears can evoke emotion and tears and calm and agitation and all of those various things with music and atmosphere. The danger in using them in churches is that people learn to either require them to worship, or think that that IS worship.
We've started a discussion about worship and what it is at http://www.wonderfulpages.com/wonderfulworship/ and I'd love to have you come by and read and perhaps join us.
Thanks for a chance to talk, I hope I wasn't too forward.

Great question Mr. Pages. Really probably worth a whole post of itself sometimes.
I'm sure you mean that we should always worship no matter what because it's a spirit issue, not style. But even that limits the view of "worship" when we recognize the entirety of "worship" is not even music.
When it comes to music, I'm sorry, but I am effected by style and genre of songs.
If this weren't the case, why would we spend so much time fashioning our music and services, and why so many styles. Why don't we all just go to a "traditional" conference and sing "hymns." There are some songs that I have trouble worshiping to. Shout To The Lord is so dated for me and was so overplayed that it is a struggle to worship to for me.
God says to sing a new song to the Lord. I think that's because he's doing new things and a "fresh" expression of worship can help draw us in closer.
The sound clip that played clearly evoked emotion from people as seen by the reaction, and it effected our worship experience.
So, do I "worship" God regardless of my feelings and experience? Absolutely. My life is his. Can certain experiences, atmospheres, and music manifest the presence of God in a special way that allows me to sense God's presence in a special way? Absolutely.
Let's keep chattin though. Thoughts? Anyone else? Agree? Disagree?

Some great quotes, thanks.
I do have to ask this though, as someone who is currently struggling with what worship is and what it is supposed to be:
The phrases "That song is so old and bleh to me." "That pulled me in and the song was fresh." caught my attention and I've sat here and pondered and prayed about them. I'm curious to hear them from a worship leader.
What does "freshness" have to do with worshipping God?
