I think there comes a time when you can “redefine the relationship” as an old friend* once said.
Most will agree that the Bible calls us to love and care about people, but I don’t necessarily agree that you have to like everybody.

Interesting thought. I have a friend who is kind, loyal, thoughtful, and I know that she would do anything for me that I ask. Unfortunately I don’t respect MANY of her moral or personal decisions. She isn’t a Christian, but she knows what I think and chooses to be my friend anyway and for that I will continue to be her friend.

It’s not as clear-cut when it comes to friends, I think, but when applying the concepts to one’s enemies it seems less problematic: It does not seem right to say that we should always respect our enemies, even though it is true that we should always love them.
Part of the problem, though, is that the term “respect” is ambiguous and has several distinct meanings, each of which may be compatible or synonymous with love to differing degrees: http://www.answers.com/respect&r=67

Ephesians 5:33 “However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.”
Hmmm… Don’t know how that applies here, but it’s what came to mind.
