I was told by some that we have the worst clapping church in history.  So we played this instructional video before worship to start off with a bit of fun.
Restless was awesome to introduce.  Unfortunately I capoed the wrong fret and I’m ticked at myself cause it would have been a bit better up a step.
Singing Guy Love with Chris was awesome and actually went over better than I expected it to I think.
It was a lot of fun to roch out with a full band for my last week after 3 years of worshipping hard with our CLC family.

And today marks the beginning of a new chapter for us.
CLC – thanks again for going to the throne with us every week, for investing in us and in the lives of our kids, and for loving us during this season of ministry.  We are praying that God will bless CLC greatly and do amazing things there in 2010.

Only thing I forgot to mention in the video: for the past month or so I've been consistent at memorizing the music and not using a stand.  As you see in the video, didn't happen this last week.  And when I watched it, it really kinda bugged me.  For one, if it's there, even if I know the song I tend to look at it.  And when it's not, it both frees me up to really lead and gets rid of this bug thing in between myself and other worshippers.  I think I'll work on getting back to that this week.

This weekend we kicked off Advent Conspiracy.
We really wanted to mix things up and get back in the swing of some creativity with this series, so as you can see, we totally switched up our seating.  The pic is from when we were setting up.  I didn’t manage to get any shots during the gathering.  Maybe next week.  We set up all the chairs in more of a semi-circle with the cross standing right in the front in the center.  I love sitting in a more intimate arrangement where we can actually see each other, and I also love that with the band behind the cross it seems to take a little focus off of us being center stage and puts it where it belongs.

We also hung and 8’x8′ panel with the AC logo on it up on the stage.  Came out great!  We set up some dividers at the back of the room to close it in some, draped them in red fabric, put the communion stations back there, and threw up some panels with another version of the logo oversprayed on them.  The last thing we added was a little visual to remind us as we enter this series what we have done to Christmas.  At the foot of the cross was a manger and in it were boxes for a Wii and an X-box 360.

Family was up for T.G. so my brother-in-law Tim joined me on electric guitar.  love having him!  We opened up with Fee’s new version of Joy To The World called All Creation Sing.  I hate Christmas music, so I love when we can get a new spin on it.  This is a good one.  Check it out.  We went into a special kids time where Ed read them some of The Grinch before they went to Sunday School.  That was kinda the theme for the morning.  As greeting came to a close we did a quick rendition of Sixpence’s “You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch.”  Lori did a great job singing it.  Check out the rest of the setlist below:

Reflections: It was a fun service to open up the series.  The storytime with the kids didn’t go quite as well as we expected I think, but that will happen on occasion when you take a risk and do something different.  I have to say, for me, the worship time was pretty freaking awesome.  Seeing people really respond, stepping up to the cross, and really engaging moved me to tears.  It was a place I haven’t personally been in worship in a while, and that felt pretty good.  Also, How He Loves Us is just a powerful freaking song and I love it!

Be sure to come back tomorrow for the Movie Confessional.  Sunday night we screened What Would Jesus Buy.  I questioned whether or not to share about that one, but I will.

Unfortunately, with all the business I had going on that morning, I didn't get any video of it.  I have a feeling the three of them are cool with that though!  I do however have a confessional from last week that I need to just get edited and uploaded.  Maybe soon.

On the teaching front, I taught this week on our topic of money, and more specifically on the concept of tithing.  Touchy subject, but I actually loved teaching it cause I believe so strongly in the idea.  Teaching still stretches me out of my comfort zone quite a bit, which is another reason I love getting to do it.  It's a great way to learn and hopefully get a little better each time.

I'll embed the message below in case anyone wants to check it out.  We missed the beginning with me talking about Caleb and his new use of the word "mine", but it works out fine without it.  Most of the content is pulled from a mix of stuff from Craig Groschel and David Trotter when we went through the topic at Revolution a few years ago, and I think he pulled a bit from Ed Young. 

Anyway, that's it.  I also stretched myself by not reading a completely reading a
transcript of the message, but getting it into bullet point form and
trying to really get it in me. Overall, got some good feedback, and it was a good morning.  Now, on to next week!

A few thoughts and recap of the day for those interested:

Facebook Birthday:  Social networking can be great.  I had people posting Happy Birthdays all day long.  In reality, lots of them wouldn’t have without the ease of Facebook.  Some look at that and say it isn’t worth much then.  I, on the other hand, appreciate hearing from everyone and appreciate the ease it allows for in communicating.  So to all you who wished me a Happy Birthday on Facebook, thanks a ton!  I was surprised how much it actually brightened my day.  If you said it on MySpace, haven’t even checked it yet.  Didn’t occur to me til now.  You should be using Facebook instead anyway.

And that’s not to downplay those of you who called or sent snail mail.  Even cooler.  You get my point with the Facebook thing though.

Community Service:  Today instead of having our typical gathering, to end our Outflow series the church left the building to do service in our community.  So consider this my Worship Confessional as well.

We gathered and sang 2 songs.

• Stir In Me – an oldie for me, but only the second time we’ve sung it here.  It’s an all-time fave for me and I couldn’t resist eventually introducing it here.
• Be Glorified – A real oldie, but also one of my old faves and thought the words worked well for the morning.

From there we did a few announcements then organized to go.
I led a team doing yardwork and other maintenance for a couple neighbors right around the church.

Met 2 other neighbors while we were out.
One was very thankful for the work we were doing in his next door neighbors yard and said he was really glad we never moved as a church.  Glad to have us around.
Good to get to know neighbors and create a positive image!

Creative Planning:  I then spent from 1pm-4pm in a meeting planning creative elements for our next series, One Prayer.  If you haven’t heard about this series yet, check out the website!  over 1300 churches, over 787,000 people.  We’re starting a week late cause of our service weekend.  but hey, we’re Santa Cruz.  We show up late to everything and we like to be the rebels.

It’s been way too long since we’ve had one of these creative meetings for our services.  It makes a big difference and I am REALLY excited about plans for this next series.  The video teachings may be a stretch for our church, but if we can get past that, I think this series really has the potential to be the highlight of this year!

80’s Themed Surprise Party:  My wife told me we were going to Maggiano’s for dinner, then out to see Indiana Jones.  I was wiped and oddly looking forward to a low key evening.  I walked in the door and a bunch of people dressed funny yelled surprise and the party was on.  I’m a people person and an extrovert, so it didn’t take long to shift gears and have a great time.  A quick shower and a 5 minute 80’s outfit creation and I was ready to go!

Rachel, although apparently it way stressed her out all week, did a great job planning this without me finding out.  Unfortunately for her I do have “Spider Sense” and the thought breezed through my head for some reason as I was walking up the steps, but I still didn’t really expect it.

The house looked awesome.  As you walked in it said “Welcome Back To the 80’s” and had pictures of me as a kid in the 80’s.  None of our picture frames had our pictures in them.  They all had pictures like the Seaver’s, the Cosby’s, a 3 picture tribute for the King of Pop himself, Ronald Reagan, and Paula Abdul just to name a few.  Thanks to Shawna for helping her decorate all afternoon.

Our friends James and Jill hooked me up with a gift I’m totally stoked about.  My Nike +.  Really wanted this probably more than anything.  Will be great for my workouts.  Thanks guys!!

Another Friends Birthday:  And it just wouldn’t be right to finish this post without recognizing my good friend Jamie who shares the same day of birth and celebrated her __th with a different last name than last year.  Swing by her blog and wish her a Happy Belated Birthday.
